Chandigarh’s Angad Cheema, 35, clinched his second consecutive win on the PGTI, marking a revival of sorts in his career as he romped home for a four-shot victory at the Coal India Open at Kensville Golf & Country Club in Ahmedabad as the tour returned to action after a three-month summer break. The event marked Coal India’s debut as another significant new major corporate sponsor as the PGTI continues to strengthen its reputation by attracting reputed new corporate partners under the leadership of cricket legend Kapil Dev.
Cheema, who had won the Kapil Dev Grant Thornton Invitational in April—the final event before the mid-season break—carded rounds of 69-67-69-70 to finish at 13-under 275, securing his fourth career PGTI title and moving to second place on the PGTI Rankings (Order of Merit) with total season earnings of ₹55 lacs, thanks to his Rs 15 lacs winners cheque.
Another experienced player, 40 year old Amardeep Malik of Noida finished runner-up at 9-under, carding 69-65-72-73, while 28 year old Yuvraj Singh Sandhu, the current Order of Merit leader with two wins this season, placed fifth with 70-70-71-71 for 6-under.
The tour now heads to Karnataka for the Rs 1 crore Mysuru Open, scheduled from August 12–15.
