IGPL goes to Mauritius

Sachin Baisoya became season’s second winner in Mauritius

The fact that IGPL played in Mauritius last week and next goes to South Africa and Congo, reveals two facts – the positive is that Indian players get to play on overseas courses and away from their old, familiar Indian venues. The other is that the lack of championship courses in India is forcing IGPL to look overseas for venues.

The IGPL also revealed its new LIV Golf type team format in the new season,  combining individual and team formats. 10 teams, each comprising four players, compete on cumulative team scores.

The IGPL recently announced a new team structure with 10 franchise teams and a mix of domestic and international events. The first half of the season features six tournaments, including three overseas stops, with the full season expected to comprise 15 events.

Lady pro golfers,  a USP of IGPL as they launched, seem to have been left out in the new year as have top amateur players.

Teams are awarded points based on finishing position, with 100 points for the winners, 90 for second place, 80 for third, and so on.

Individually, Sachin Baisoya of New Delhi carded rounds of 67-71-67 (11-under 205) to win at Anahita Golf & Spa Resort in Mauritius, hosted by tennis legend Leander Paes.

18-year-old Veer Ganapathy of Bengaluru, the 36-hole leader, finished runner-up at 8-under 208 with rounds of 67-69-72.

The tour now moves to Royal Johannesburg Golf Club in South Africa.
