IGU Elections – Civilian clubs take control

The controversial IGU elections were held in New Delhi on December 24 and resulted in a complete change of the existing board, made up mostly of serving and retired Army officers and their spouses, and an entire new board led by Brijender Singh from Bombay Presidency GC, Maharashtra now takes over.

The outvoting of Army Officers is seen as a just result considering  the courses on Defence land do not hold any national level tournaments, conduct open junior training programs or open their doors to civilian golfers. Yet members of the Armed Forces were controlling the fate of the Indian Golf Union and thereby of the development of the game in this country.

One of the first major tasks on IGU’s hands is conducting  the upcoming US$2 million Hero Indian Open, a European Tour sanctioned event, scheduled for February and expected to be held at DLF Golf Club, Gurgaon where the last few few editions were held prior to cancellation for the past three years due to the ongoing COVID 19 pandemic.
