Indian squad relishes World Amateur Golfers Championship in Korea

The Indian squad for  the World Amateur Golfers Championship (WAGC) in South Korea, selected through the two day, 200 player SGI Open played at Jaypee Greens Golf Resort in Greater Noida, finished 13th in overall net and 14th in overall gross against players from 25 countries at one of the world’s largest and best-organised amateur events.

In the individual standings, India’s Raul Rai , playing the guest section, produced the standout performance for the country, winning Best Net in Division 1 in the Invitational section.

S.N. Rai recorded a commendable 16th place in his category net and ninth overall net, while team captain Monish Bindra finished eighth in his category net and 13th in overall gross. 

The Indian contingent, led by team captain and former pro golfer Monish Bindra, Udit Bagga, Shalendra Nath Rai, Mukesh Sharma, and Vaibhav Mehan along with players in the guest category – Raul Rai, Amit Khansaheb and R Rajagopal — relished the challenge of the rare 72-hole stroke play test in true “PGA Tour-like” conditions against nearly 500 players from 35 plus countries. The championship was played across four courses on the scenic Jeju Island: Arden Hill Resort & Golf Club, Shineville Park Country Club, Lotte Skyhill Jeju Country Club (Ocean Course) and Lotte Skyhill Jeju Country Club (Forest Course), with the event concluding on November 8.

India has been sending teams to the WAGC every year since 2009, giving club golfers a rare chance to compete on a global stage while soaking in the spirit and conditions of world class international amateur golf.
