18-year-old Megha Ganne, the Indian origin golfer from New York who is in her first year at Stanford University, shot 73-70-74 (1-over 217) to finish tied for ninth at the prestigious Augusta National Women’s Amateur (ANWA), her best finish in three appearances at the event. In her last two appearances Ganne finished 64th (2021) and 43rd (2022).
World No.1 Amateur Rose Zhang, a senior at Stanford University and Ganne’s teammate on the Stanford golf team, shot 66-65-76 (9-under 207) to win a playoff. Zhang took a five-shot lead into the final round but struggled on the front nine at Augusta National, which allowed Bae to catch her. Zhang claimed the title on the 2nd extra hole (the 10th) with a par.
Zhang already has to her name the US Women’s Amateur and the NCAA Championship titles and the ANWA title cements her spot as the No 1 amateur player in the world.
The ANWA tournament is played over 54 holes, with the first 36 holes at Champions Retreat Golf Club. Those who make the cut play the final round at the historic Augusta National Golf Club, a week prior to the The Masters.
The winner of the tournament receives invitations to the next five Augusta National Women Amateurs, that year’s U.S. Women’s Open and Women’s British Open, and any USGA, R&A, and PGA of America amateur events for which she is otherwise eligible for one year, providing she remains an amateur.
