Pro-Golf – PGA Tour

The PGA Tour recently announced 48 tournaments on its 2021-2022 schedule, which begins with the Fortinet Championship in Napa Valley, California from Sep. 16-19 and includes three co-sanctioned events with the European Tour which will count on both Tour’s rankings and official prize money. The three events are the Barbasol Championship, the Barracuda Championship and the Scottish Open.

The Scottish Open will also get a new sponsor in the South Korean car brand Genesis, which has been sponsoring the Genesis Invitational on the PGA Tour in LA for the past several years.

“Adding an existing, strong title sponsor in Genesis to our Strategic Alliance in the form of the Genesis Scottish Open – to be sanctioned by both Tours – is a significant step for the global game,” said PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan. “We are committed to continuing to evolve and adapt, and with our ever-strengthening partnership with the European Tour, to take the global game to the heights we all know it is capable of.”

As part of the “Strategic Alliance” and collaboration between the two tours, The Irish Open will nearly double the purse to US$ 6mn starting in 2022.

But, on the other hand the World Golf Championship (WGC) events went from four to two. The WGC FedEx St. Jude Championship will replace the Northern Trust and the WGC-Mexico will become a full-field regular PGA Tour event in Mexico.

The 2022 schedule will also kick off nine-year domestic media rights agreements with Viacom CBS, Comcast/NBC and ESPN, indicating the health and popularity of golf is as strong as ever even in the post Tiger Woods era.

Regarding the Asian swing of the PGA Tour, the CJ Cup which used to be held in South Korea prior to COVID-19 will once again be played in Las Vegas from October 14-17. Whereas, the ZOZO Championship which was won by Tiger Woods in Japan in 2019 and played in the U.S. last year, will return to Japan from October 21-24 followed by the WGC-HSBC Championship, which was cancelled last year.

The PGA Tour’s strategic partner, the European Tour is scheduled to release its 2022 calendar soon, as the tour encompasses several events in Asia and South Africa where travel restrictions are still causing concern.
