PGTI announced a first step towards their new proposed pro league by announcing UP Prometheans as its inaugural franchise—a move that also comes in the wake of the Indian Golf Premier League (IGPL), launched last August.
Backed by the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI) and developed in partnership with Game of Life Sports (GOLS), the League introduces a PGTI-sanctioned, city-based team format at a time when alternative club league models have begun reshaping the Indian golf landscape.
The inaugural League is proposed to run from February 21 to March 6, 2026, across Classic Golf & Country Club, Jaypee Greens and Qutab Golf Course in Delhi NCR. Each franchise will feature 10 PGTI players, selected through an auction on January 31, 2026, with leading names from the PGTI circuit expected to participate.
The league is intended to be played in match-play format, keeping in mind television and digital platforms, with Pro-Am events, fan zones, live entertainment and premium broadcast production forming part of the package.
The Noida-based UP Prometheans, owned by Prometheus School, became the first confirmed franchise. Founded in 2019, the school has positioned the team as a long-term investment in elite sport and athlete development.
PGTI has recruited veteran sports administrator Amrit Mathur as Commissioner and strategic support from Amitabh Kant and experienced IPL veteran Joy Bhattacharjya.
With just 4 weeks to go till the league’s proposed dates, the pressure on PGTI to deliver a commercially sound league appears daunting since the money’s involved for each franchise are significant.
With the rewards for pro players in India having grown significantly in the past two years, if the PGTI is able to successfully deliver the league this season, despite the absence of star players, it will be another huge feather in PGTI’s cap and a big step forward for Indian golfers.
