PGTI – Saptak’s international experience shines through

Champion Saptak Talwar (centre) receives the trophy from Mr. Stuart Kelly, Global Head of Corporate Communications, Indorama Ventures (2nd from left), Mr. Devang Shah, MD, Navratna Group (2nd from right), Mr. Nikhil Chopra, Former Indian Cricketer (extreme right) and Mr. Amandeep Johl, CEO, PGTI (extreme left)

27-year-old Saptak Talwar, the Indian with the maximum appearances on the PGA Tour Canada and European Challenge Tour, made full use of his vast international exposure to card rounds of 68-71-69-70 to win the ₹2.7 crore (US$300,000) Indorama Ventures Open at Kalhaar Blues & Greens Golf Club in Ahmedabad at 10-under 278.

The victory marked Talwar’s second win on the PGTI, following his triumph at the Adani Invitational Golf Championship at his home course, Jaypee Greens in Greater Noida, last year. He earned ₹43.2 lakh for this week’s win, and will now become a front runner for the top spot in the PGTI’s season-ending ranking which comes with full playing rights for the 2027 DP World (European) Tour.

Talwar spent last season on the European Challenge (HotelPlanner) Tour, making 15 cuts in 18 starts and will play the scheduled Challenge Tour event at ITC Classic, Gurgaon next week.

Talwar shared his thoughts on the win over call and added, “Very happy to get win #2 under my belt at the INDORAMA Ventures Open Championship. I felt like all the stuff I learned through the summer playing in Europe helped me get over the line on such a tough golf course like Kalhaar. Looking forward to applying all the learnings when I head back over to Europe in the summer!”

Talwar is also the only Indian to have won five NCAA collegiate individual titles. He moved to the United States after the 10th standard to train at the IJGA Academy and later became the first Indian to qualify for PGA Tour Canada.

16-year-old Kartik Singh, of Delhi, formerly India’s top amateur who now holds Asian Development Tour (ADT) playing rights, had his best finish till date with 3rd place alongside 2024 PGTI season rankings leader Veer Ahlawat at 7-under 281.

The tournament was originally planned as a co-sanctioned event with the HotelPlanner Challenge Tour, but travel disruptions linked to the conflict between the United States and Iran meant the event was staged solely by the PGTI.

The tour now moves to Gurgaon for the US$300,000 DP World PGTI Open at Classic Golf & Country Club from March 19 to 22, which will be co-sanctioned with the HotelPlanner Tour.
