The governing bodies for golf, the USGA and the R&A, in a step to limit how far golfers can hit the ball, have announced a rule reducing the length of the driver from 48 inches to 46 starting Jan 1, 2022 for professionals and elite amateurs only.
This proposal is based on research from the bodies’ Distance Insights Project.
DeChambeau, who’s driving distance has perhaps forced the Tours to take action, did try his hands on using a 48-inch driver prior to the 2020 Masters, but went back to a 45 ¾ inches Cobra driver afterwards.
While the number of pros using a driver that exceeds 46-inch is extremely low, it includes the PGA Championship winner Phil Mickelson and LPGA star Brooke Henderson. Mickelson has been quite vocal on the rule, even saying the USGA is trying to make golf less fun.
