Mannat in Scotland

India’s 18-year-old Mannat Brar of Pune is currently the lone Indian at the prestigious 122nd Women’s Amateur Championship this week at Nairn, Scotland, as an Individual private entry, since after several years, the Indian Golf Union has not sent an official Indian squad. The event, organised by The R&A, is one of the world’s most historic and competitive championships in amateur golf and annually draws the best emerging talent from around the globe.

Brar, who has represented India in many international events and was the top-placed Indian amateur at the 2024 Hero Women’s Indian Open, has scored an opening 1-over 73 to lie tied-27th on the leaderboard—well placed to advance into the match play stage reserved for the top 64 after two rounds of stroke play. Should Brar progress into match play, she will make history as the first Indian to ever qualify for the Match Play segment of the Championship.

This is Mannat’s third appearance at this championship, and she enters the week with consistent international form. She made the cut at both the 2024 Women’s Amateur Asia-Pacific (WAAP) in Vietnam and a recent LET Access Series event in Europe. Earlier this year, she also competed at the Queen Sirikit Cup in the Philippines. 

Brar is the reigning All India Ladies Amateur Champion and had a standout result at the R&A Girls’ Amateur Championship last year, where she finished third. That performance, among others, has established her as one of the most consistent Indian amateurs in recent times.
