Julian Suri is still the man to chase at Hero Indian Open

Only eight Indians made it to the weekends at the $1.75 million Hero Indian Open and leading the Indian fight are Shubhankar Sharma and Rashid Khan, both T-19th at -2.

The man to chase is still Indian-American Julian Suri, who fired a second consecutive round of 5-under 67 today to take his total to 10-under 134 and a 2-shot lead over the South African George Coetzee and Swedish Robert Karlsson.

This is what he had to say about his round today –

Suri, born in the US to an Indian father and a Mexican mother, is playing just his second event of the season after undergoing surgery for an abdominal hernia. Before last week’s Malaysian Championships, he had played the Turkish Open in November last year.

“I hit a lot of good shots and gave myself a ton of chances on the first nine and none of them dropped, particularly with speed and not hitting them hard enough. So, just try to free it up and putt with feel like I normally do.”

Suri, who last won on the European Tour two years ago, credited his hot putter for yet another commendable round in the event, co-sanctioned by the Asian Tour and European Tour.

“I hit it really well the whole day and I just tried to free it up a little bit on the second nine with my putting. I putted with more feel instead, which is how I have usually been putting, and I gave myself a lot more chances,” said Suri, who last year missed the cut at the same event, with 76-82 and this week he is 24 shots better than that.

He took out some time to wish his alma-mater Duke University Basketball team too, cheering with the call “Go Blue Devils” for the NCAA March Madness back home the coolest guy in golf right now –

Other Indian origin players in the field include the likes of Jack Singh Brar and Aaron Rai, both from England are currently T-19 and T-32 respectively.
