Anika Varma of India is soon headed to join Oregon Women’s Golf team
17-year-old Anika Varma, who is originally from Noida but who’s family moved a few years ago to Sacramento, California, shot 72-71-77-73 (9-over 293) to finish tied-30th at the Southwestern Amateur at Desert Mountain Golf Club in Arizona.
In 2021, Anika Varma finished T-19th with scores of 79-73-73-73 (14-over 298). She will be next seen at U.S. Junior Girls’, a tournament she qualified in a playoff from July 18-24 in Kentucky.
The Southwestern Amateur is a regional tournament dating back to 1915 with its mission to promote golf throughout the amateur communities in the desert southwest. The tournament committee issues invitations to the tournament based on World Amateur rankings with a limited field.
This was the second consecutive year that the tournament had a women’s category and had 72 lady participants showing the huge emphasis being placed on giving girls equal opportunity in golf.
