Arjun Atwal, still India’s only winner on the PGA Tour, showed that he could be a force to contend with on the over 50 PGA Champions Tour, shooting 68-68-69 (11-under 205) to finish third in the US$ 2.3mn Pure Insurance Championship at the famous Pebble Beach Golf Links in California.
Just as he did, when he won his PGA Tour title over a decade ago, Atwal went through Tuesday’s 18 hole qualifier to earn a spot in the field and made the most of his opportunity by almost winning in his fifth PGA TOUR Champions start. Atwal has earned US$ 228,117, having made four cuts in his five events but needs to have a strong finish to the season as he strives to get into the top-36 in the year’s rankings so he can automatically earn full playing rights for 2024.
As per the PGA TOUR Champions policy, Atwal owing to his top-10 finish, will get into next week’s US$ 2.1mn event from Oct. 6-8 in Jacksonville, Florida.
