Avani progresses in Scotland

 Avani finished 11th in the strokeplay event in Scotland

15-year-old Avani Prashanth and 13-year-old Zara Anand are representing India at The R&A’s prestigious Girls’ Amateur at the famous British Open Championship course, Carnoustie in Scotland this week. 

Avani, India’s top ranked lady amateur, who has enjoyed a summer playing big tournaments in England, Scotland, France and Germany over the past 2 -3 months shot 74-76 (+8) to finish T-14th out of 144 players to advance to the Match play stage of the tournament. 13 year old Zara missed out with scores of 82-82 (+22) in tough windy conditions which resulted in a high cut off score set at 15-over 157.

Prashanth’s opponent in matchplay is Italian Galasso Rebecca who qualified in 50th place in the strokeplay event.

The Girls’ Amateur Championship, first played in 1919 is a highly coveted junior title.

Past winners include major champions and Solheim Cup players such as Anna Nordqvist, Suzann Pettersen, Azahara Munoz and Georgia Hall. More recently, Slovenia’s Pia Babnik triumphed in 2019 and has already gone on to win on the Ladies’ European Tour.

The winner gains exemptions into the Women’s Amateur Championship, the US Girls’ Junior Championship, Final Qualifying for the AIG Women’s Open and the Augusta National Women’s Amateur.
