The Classic Golf & Country Club, Gurgaon, once again proved a tremendous host for India’s senior leading amateurs who played the AVT Champions Tour finale from March 15-17.

Ajai Sirohi, a winner of the AVT event in Nov. 2020 at the same venue repeated the feat with rounds of 76-72 (4-over 148) to beat Ankur Prakash and Rishi Narain, former Asian Games Gold Medallist, by a stroke.

While Jaypee Greens’ Ankur Prakash missed out on the individual title in Gurgaon, he picked up 27 points, which was just enough for him to claim overall season honours by a single point over Chandigarh’s Sandeep Sandhu, who earned 17 points. Prakash finished with a total of 79 points over the four events to Sandhu’s 78. Prakash benefitted from playing all four events while Sandhu did not play in the first event in Bangalore.

The AVT Champions Tour is a  series of four annual tournaments that attracts the best veteran players in the country, including the likes of Asian Games gold medalists Lakshman Singh, Rishi Narain & Amit Luthra, former All India Amateur Champions Ashok Malik and Alan Singh, as well as All-India Senior winners Gangesh Khaitan & Vijay Kumar. Other notable competitors in the over 100-strong fields were 1983 cricket world cup team winning captain Kapil Dev, senior internationals Jaspreet Bakshi, Anil Jule, Ajai Sirohi, Capt Cheema &  GC Sharma.

The players competed for the overall title, as well as in various veteran age categories over 50, over 55, over 60, over 65, & over 70. There was a four-member inter-city team event in gross and net categories as well as net prizes in two handicap categories

The AVT Champions tour series prepares Indian seniors to test out their skills against the country’s best while preparing for their international outing to the annual Asia-Pacific Senior Amateur Championship.
