The apex body for amateur golf in India, the Indian Golf Union (IGU) has been in the limelight for all the wrong reasons since 2016. It was in 2016 that IGU was first notified to fall in line with the Government’s National Sports Code, and since then has received violation notices several times. Overall the struggle is between Army Clubs which currently control the IGU and civilian clubs where most of the development of the game is really taking place.
The civilian club members want to hold IGU elections on Dec. 24 at Qutab Golf Course in New Delhi, in accordance with the directive from the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports (MYAS) and the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to comply with the National Sports Development Code 2011. However, the said clubs are on the receiving end of resistance from the Army.
It remains to be seen how the election turns out.
