Lahiri 15th in Mexico

Anirban Lahiri

Lahiri’s good form continues on PGA Tour

Anirban Lahiri had a strong showing on the PGA Tour last week shooting 68-68-72-66 (10-under 274) to finish tied 15th at the US$ 7.3mn Mexico Open at Vallarta, Mexico. The tournament was won by Spain’s former world no 1, Jon Rahm, who finished at 17-under.

34-year-old two-time Olympian Anirban was in good shape going into the weekend at 6-under but stumbled on Saturday with a one-over 72. However, he rebounded with his best round of the week on Sunday to climb 20 spots and post his third top-25 finish of the year.

Lahiri came into the week ranked 85th in the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) and should rise further after his performance in Mexico. He had jumped to 89th in the rankings following his second-place finish at the US$20 million Player’s Championship in Florida in March, having started the year ranked 278.  Lahiri remains the only Indian ranked inside the top 100 in the world.

He is projected to rise to 55th on the US PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup Rankings and is virtually already assured of a spot in the year end Fedex Cup playoffs.

Arjun Atwal, the only Indian to have won on the PGA Tour, who is getting ready to make his over 50 Champions tour debut, played the event on a sponsor’s exemption and shot 73-71 (2-over 144) to miss the cut, which was set at 2-under 140.
