My journey on Tour – Germany, Spain and England: John Catlin

0

Hello again! Thanks so much for tuning in for another write up of my weekly conquests on the European Tour. This time we will start in Munich, Germany for the BMW International Open and then head to Malaga, Spain for the Estrella Damm n.a. Andalucia Masters hosted by the Sergio Garica foundation and we will finish in St. Annes England for British Open Final Qualifying.

John Catlin at BMW International in Munich

I embarked on my journey to Munich from Oakland and flew to Atlanta where I would stay for a night to visit my friend James Bowen, who has played on the Asian Tour and is now living in the area.
From there, I was supposed to fly to Chicago and from there to Munich however, when I checked in for my flight, I was told that my itinerary had changed last minute and that I would be routed through Paris then to Munich and would take off two hours later.

Oh, the joys of travelling! Once I finally arrived in Munich and got all settled, I got to experience the comfort of BMW courtesy cars that allowed me to put my feet up while being escorted to and from my hotel to the golf course as well as a golf course that was in perfect condition and beautiful weather!
Munich also from my brief time there became my new favourite city in Europe. I would highly recommend anyone who enjoys travel to make Munich a part of your upcoming Europe trip! I had a good week in the BMW international open that was highlighted by a second-round 66 which saw me move into the top 15 after two rounds. I ultimately finished in 44th place on -3. I enjoyed my week.

I then flew from a nearby airport to Munich in a town called Memmingen to Malaga Spain for the Estrella Damm n.a. Andalucia Masters hosted by the Sergio Garcia Foundation. From the moment I landed until I left, I was confronted with beautiful landscapes of mountains falling into the Mediterranean sea with temperatures between 22 and 30 Celcius making for a very enjoyable week of views and weather. From the moment I arrived on the golf course, I saw why Valderrama (the host venue) was so highly rated as one of the best courses in Europe! The conditions were absolutely pristine, the clubhouse was a testament to beautiful European architecture, and the practice facilities couldn’t be more beneficial to golfers trying to fine their games. I played my hardest, but ultimately the difficult of the course got the better of me, and I ended up missing the cut by two strokes. Because of this, I flew Friday night to Leeds England for more practice on links golf.

I spent one morning in Leeds and then headed to St. Annes for some afternoon practice at a nearby course the venue for the Open final qualifying called Blackpool North Shore Links. It was a great course that gave me a similar look and playing conditions to that of St. Annes Old Links (host venue for qualifying), so I very much enjoyed this experience. After two great days of preparation, I played 36 holes on Tuesday to try to qualify for 148th Open Championship at Royal Portrush. I was happy with the state of my game all day but ended up falling short of the top 3 finishers that earned the coveted spot to play in the years final major. However, I love every minute of links golf, and I hope I get to play more events in these type of conditions.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this write up of my career and travels on the European Tour. I look forward to seeing you back for my next write up shortly.
